meet europe's (this is official!) second fattest cat, weighing in at an impressive 14 kg. she resides in the seaside town of marmaris where she goes by the less formal title of, "nuriye, our fat cat".

today we hired a scooter and visited the small villages surrounding the coastal town of marmaris. it was a long day in the sun! we enjoyed stopping to swim at the many beach coves and for short breaks talking with locals in their small hillside towns.

the ruins

today we visited the ruins of the ancient city of ephesus. there was so much left behind to see and so much reconstruction work has been carried out that you can really get a sense of what the city may have been like, far more than the cites of troy and pompeii that we had previously visited. we were taken by surprise and really enjoyed the day exploring!

gallipoli

in 1934 atatürk wrote a tribute to the ANZACs killed at gallipoli:

those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. therefore rest in peace. there is no difference between the johnnies and the mehmets to us where they lie side by side now here in this country of ours... you, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. after having lost their lives on this land, they have become our sons as well.
